    Stevia teachings?

    • Green Deane November 16, 2011, 6:36 am

Hmmmm… stevia is a commercial crop… though it was once wild in South America. There is a wild version that grows in the southwest US…. perhaps I can write about that.

You can use stevia in tea. And if you grind the leaves you can use it sugar. The leaves are edible, and its is bitter but you can eat it raw.

While looking online for kidney health promoting plants, I saw the Chanca piedra, aka stone-breaker, also known as quinine weed, as well as many other names. It is said to have great medicinal properties and looks like a weed that grows everywhere in the Tampa Bay area. I just wondered if you are familiar with it.

I think a relative grows there but those plants are medicinal. I am culinary. While I know some herbals it is not my expertise.

One day, I would love to take one of your classes. I just fell onto a website that had your videos. I watched a couple and look forward to the many more. Valuable information. I enjoyed your story, and in some parts can relate. I also spent many childhood days alone collecting, exploring and admiring natures beauty. I have a passion for wild edible and madicinal plants, and edible organic landscaping. After my service in the Army I stumbled into massage therapy and fell in love with it. I keep busy with that and my Navy Reserve career, but every second of free time I devote to playing in the dirt, on my bike, loving my plants, or exploring. Living with an HOA in a place where everyone uses chemicals on there yard to make the perfect lawn. I am defiant and refuse to follow suit. Im in pursuit of a self sustaining, purposeful and pretty yard. I welcome dandelions, but I was struggling with dollar weed. After your video, it is now welcomed in my yard as well. I look forward to learning much more, I am an official fan:) Have a beautiful blessed day!

    Hi,
What is your advice on foraging in a big city? What are good areas for foraging in a city? What should I avoid? Are public parks OK? What about pesticides, herbicides etc. Any advice on city foraging will be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you very much.

    • Green Deane May 9, 2012, 2:37 pm

If the soil is above the parking lot level and the water is wholesome foraging in a city isn’t too bad. Steve Brill argues it is superior to agricultural land.

I will definitely be attending the class and may be bringing my wife and daughter along if I can talk them into coming with me. … I’ve been watching your You Tube videos like a fanatic over the last few weeks & am up to like number 45. I live in Athens Ga and I want to lear more from a knowledgeable person as well as use it as a great family building activity.

Thanks again for any info to help me find a great class or skilled instructor in my area..

You can reserve a class or just come on over. There will be activities going on all day long; and lots of demos, vendors with handcrafted items. The festival is free with a suggested, but not required, $10. donation for Putney Farm’s upkeep. See Putney Farm events for more info

    Good morning Mr. Deane,
You often mention foraging in Maine throughout your site. I am in central ME (Bangor/Newport). Do you have a recommendation for an expert who would be willing to work with me. I looked on your resource page and only found experts >90miles from me. The outfit in Augusta is also out of my price-range. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am strongly drawn to foraging. You may also pass my email along to anyone you believe may be interested so they may contact me directly. Thank you for your time.

I just started watching your videos & they are great. I recently found a plant that looks very similar to a pennywort but the leaf has small coarse hairs & the stem is hairy also. I know without seeing it you can not make a positive ID but I was hoping you could give me a good guess so I could research it further. I live in Southwest PA & I found in growing in my lawn.

Hi Deane! When you have a moment, I was wondering if you could please tell me if I have oyster mushrooms here:
    https://photos.app.goo.gl/WYfno2BS8UysNYRs5
I just noticed them today and they look to have the right characteristics but I also know “pretty sure” isn’t the name of this game! Also, with other plants, I look for every “item” to fit, so I was curious about the spore print on mushrooms. How critical is it to do if everything else is right and what is the proper way to do it?
I have been foraging the typical Florida plants for many years and have been wanting to get into mushrooms as well.
    Thanks!

    Hi!

I’m Lauren, the propagation manager here at ECHO in North Fort Myers. I got your contact information from Charlie, our nursery manager, and he let me know that you do foraging walks around the area. I am VERY INTERESTED in local medinicals and edibles that grow wild in my area, so I am DYING to learn from you!!
I looked on your website and saw the class schedules – I am, unfortunately, unavailable to go to the Port Charlotte class on the 17th, but I am very VERY hopeful that there will be a class in the same accessible radius for me again soon (March? April?)
I could very well have a group of 3-10 folks who would join from ECHO, if I shared about the class with our interns and staff. The work you are doing is incredible and I cannot wait to learn from you.

    Thanks for all you do!

Saturday, April 13th, Red Bug Slough 5200 S. Beneva Road, Sarasota. 9 a.m. to noon. Meet at the parking lot.

Sunday, April 14th, Bayshore Live Oak Park, Bayshore Drive. Meet at Ganyard Rd and Bayshore. 9 a.m. to noon.

Saturday, April 20th, Blanchard Park,  2451 Dean Rd, Union Park, FL 32817, meet beside the tennis courts, 9 a.m. to noon.

Sunday, April 21st, Wickham Park: 2500 Parkway Drive, Melbourne, FL, meet at the dog park. 9 a.m. to noon.

Hi, I submitted a comment yesterday asking for a reservation for two people. I don’t see any way to email you besides submitting a comment. I haven’t seen anything come back, so I’m not sure if you will get either of my messages. We will not be able to attend after all, so if you did reserve two spots for us, then we need to cancel the reservation. Thank you.

Hi Green Deane! I just found your website and learned about what you do, and I am wondering if you will be adding other classes into June. I live in Vero Beach and I sure wish you would do one here! 🙂 But I am happy to drive into Melbourne, West Palm or just about anywhere else to participate. And, BTW, how utterly ridiculous that Ocala no longer allows you to do this. Cheers, Petra L.

A friend of mine attended your Mead Garden event yesterday and told me about your free class on Friday that appears to be the 11th annual Urban Crawl, or 10th annual a little further down on the classes page. I would like to bring my partner for this event but wanted to ask if there is a lot of walking during the tour. He recently had surgery and is recovering well, and he may be able to make the whole walk but we need to get your advice about rest breaks before confirming. Can we get a short description of the event for those with physical limitations? Thanks.

It is a two-hour stroll around Winter Park, mostly on sidewalks.
