hi deane! googled pindo palms and found your video. great source of info–thanks! i’m trying to gather enough fruit from the one in my yard which is fruiting right now to make some jelly and/or wine 🙂 i think i read in a comment that i can freeze what’s been picked up today and wait for more to ripen? is that right? is there any way to cut the limb with the green fruit and let it ripen in a protected environment? or does it need to ripen on the tree? thanks for your help!!

type in Pokeweed/pictures of in y0ur search window and see if what y0ur wife is cooking is poke sallet. It tastes very much like spinach. It is one plant that is hard to mistake.
My son taught me something re poke sallet last year. So we kept eating the new leaves from the top on into the summer with no problems.
One summer, a bulldozer had been busy clearing 15 or 20 acres next to my home. The following spring there was a bumper crop of poke sallet growing there. I froze about 50 quarts or more and made lots of poke stalk (young shoots) pickles, using a dill pickle recipe. We all liked them – our young kids ate them like candy. I parboiled the greens, before freezing them, but did not parb0il the young stalks for pickles.
Would like to comment on pokeweed and its berries toxicity. I hve ate my share and think there might be some truth to the statement made by others about it might cause precocious setting of th long bones since all my siblings seemed to share my short arms and legs.
However we never parboiled through two waters – only one to the point of eliting and forming a scum on top of water. At this point we poured the water out, rinsed the poke sallet in cold water and proceeded to cook it, in its final water before eating.
As for the poke berries that I was raised to believe were poison, I can definitely state that they are not poison. I have been taking them for 30 to
40 years and am still here to tell y0u they aren’t poison with no adverse
effects. Before the questions pour in, since the lady who advised me to take them didn’t know how many or how often her aunt took them, I
started with 5 berries (unseeded) washed down with water, 4 times per day. No problems, kept increasing 2 berries each time daily, until I was
taking 25 poke berries 4 times a day and kept that dosage steady. Best
medicine you will find f0r arthritis, etc.
Approximately 15 years after I started taking them, heard in a physiology
lecture at well known medical college: “from a little research project we have going here, we can tell y0u that poke berries throws the body into gear to fight” which I assumed translates into it jump starts or boosts our
immune systems. I just grinned & kept my mouth shut. I will fess up that
I have gotten more sophisticated and have graduated to extracting the berries instead of dehydrating them which means it keeps much longer than just dehydrating them.
Cooked Poke berries without seeds are not toxic, according to many reports.
The tale of poke berries being poison dies slowly. When I told Dr. James A. Duke (after his lecture at a folk medicine festival, where he was asked about a folk herbal remedy for arthritis) that poke berries are as good a remedy as you would find anywhere, the attendee who had asked the question, who was also into folk medicine commented that she always thought they were poison. When she learned that I just washed the fresh berries down, without chewing them, she commented that maybe it was the seeds that were poison. But on second thought, the birds plant a lot of our wild foraging plants by depositing them back on the earth after it passes through their GI tracts, so this is one question you will have to decide for yourself.
My personal thoughts on this is that my digestive tract wasn’t particular about avoiding whatever was present in the seeds while passing through, most likely nothing in the pokeberry is poison.
Seriously doubt that my diluents (alcohol or AC vinegar) differentiates between contents of the berry and the seeds contained in them either and I take 1 tsp. 4 times a day with no problems.
I have never made a pie or baked any food with them in it, but if and when I do, I will certainly not bother to seed them for my own self, as there is usually at least two fair sized seeds inside each small berry. Maybe next fall, when the berries come in, I will bake us up
a treat and let you know the outcome.
Nutrition wise, judging from the color of the pokeberries and comparing them to the blueberry, which is said to be fantastic, the pokeberry should be just as nutritious.
Didn’t mention it earlier, but when my brother was found using a walker & limping very badly told me he had been diagnosed with the gout and the doctor said there was no cure for it, I told him that I would bring him some pokeberries if he would take them. He said he would and I carried him a grocery bag full of fresh berries the next day, and instructed him to start with 10 berries 4 times per day and if no diarrhea the next day, increase a couple of berries each day until he was taking 25 each time, 4 times a day.
I also told him to eat plenty of asparagas. He told me his gout was gone 4 days later.

One small question if I may – which book/field guide would you reccomend for my area for foraging wild edibles (with or without fotos – I can identify using wiki/Google images etc) im in Sicily/Italy. Thank for writing. You might want to google Francois Couplan to see if he has nay Europe-based foraging books. His North American book is not suited for your needs.

Please let me ask some questions so that I don’t mess things up? #1- Ok so the starter is just like a mother in vinager or sourdough starter correct? #2-What kind of container do you store your starter in inbetween making batches? How is it sealed?#3-Do you store it in the fridge? #4- Do you leave it out for any length of time after feeding it the 1/2 cup of cider and or sugar?#5-Is it airtight in storage?#6-If you are not using it for a while do you take some out and throw it away and put some fresh cider and or sugar in the starter?
Let me understand basicly you take a 1/2 cup of fresh cider and swap it with a 1/2 cup of starter. then airlock in warm place for a week or so. Then transfer to smaller bottles and referidgerator plastic not glass, correct? So you can not store in glass gallon jugs?
