Foraging Instructors

Foraging goat, Rodopou Peninsula, Crete (photo by Green Deane)

The quickest and safest way to learn foraging is with a local expert. You not only learn what there is to know but do not spend time learning things you don’t need to know. Further, you also get the local angle on plants, important information that is usually not found in foraging books published on a national or even regional level. The local expert can give you insights to climate and species variation. Also with a teacher you get the opportunity to have your identification skills honed and your judgment sharpened. That builds confidence.

Below is a list of about 115 foraging teachers and instructors from the United States, Canada and Europe. The beginnings of the list started in the 90s in a book by Dr. Peter Gail. It moved to the Internet via Sunny Savage. It has been expanded and maintain here since 2008. There is no charge for inclusion. It’s just a public service. If you know of someone competent to add to the list please let me know. There are also several states still missing teachers. To make corrections, additions or deletions contact me. Last updated: 5 May 2021.

And now to make my lawyer happy: Disclaimer: The listing of foraging and plant experts is provided on this website strictly as a reference tool and is not intended to act in any way as an endorsement, recommendation, testimonial, or certification of knowledge of the subject matter contained in this website. Any contact with persons identified on this list is strictly and categorically voluntary and as such is thus separate and detached from this website. The providers of this website, its advertisers, and principles shall accept no liability for statements, representations, opinions, guarantees, omissions, behaviors, or any combination thereof made by foragers and plant experts referenced in this website. End of placating my lawyer.

Please add Michael Douglas, Maine Primitive Skills School to your list of foraging instructors. Thanks!

Because I do a lot of editing, I can’t turn my editing eye off when reading anything any more. Thought you’d like to correct the typo on the spelling of Idaho.

I am looking for a local expert in Mississauga Ontario Canada. I know a little bit of foraging. I would like to know even more. All I can find locally are dumpster foragers. I like weed.

    Thanks

    Hi Deane,

I have been an avid reader for several months now and may I just say I’ve probably learned more from you than from most of my schooling years combined (probably more my fault and the system’s than the teachers). I just wanted to ask and be sure that these teachers don’t mind being contacted at random. I could probably talk somebody’s head off about plants and foraging especially in my native area and so I just wanted to double check they wouldn’t mind an earful of questions. Thank you and may I also take this chance to thank you personally for this incredible knowledge. I am 23 and I consider this some of the most valuable information on this planet. It is a shame it is uncommon but thanks to you and your peers perhaps more and more people can share and use what you have provided.

I have personally contacted every one of these teachers. They have approved of them being listed and it is they who have given men contact information. I think there is only one that does not want direct contact and that is why I am listed as the contact for that person.

Hello, I do not know anything. My expertise starts and ends at mulberries lol. However, I really love the subject and I would like to learn more. I am really interesting in fermenting and gardening, but I would like to learn about foraging as well. I can never find any morals when I go hunting. :/ I live in Northern Illinois. I might try to contact the expert listed in Naperville if I have trouble with the reading. Its always best to learn first eyed and second hand! Thanks for the site.

    Hi Deane,

I just discovered your website and I love it. I am an amateur forager in Vancouver, BC Canada. I’m familiar with all the coastal berries and many plants but I’d love to learn more. Can you recommend anyone here?

    Hello!

Thank you for all the information and education you provide us with!

Is there anyone who could teach in (northern preferably 🙂 ) Greece??

Also with a teacher you get the opportunity to have your identification skills honed and your judgment sharpened. That builds confidence.

Can you recommend anyone in New Brunswick, or Eastern Canada in general?

Any of the Orlando/Sarasota/Palm Harbor classes would be the same plants.

I am seeing someone as a self-proclaimed expert named Dan Potts in Utah, but I’m not in contact with him yet.

    Hello Deane,
can you please recommend an instructor in Greece? Just like Carol I also moved to Greece not to long ago. Mainland Greece or any of the bigger islands would be fine. Thanks.

Sometimes they send me a bio, or others do, or I know them. My mail problem is wordpress page wouldn’t accept more entries.

Would you please add me to your instructors list? I’m Founder of http://www.WildFoodies.org, including a meetup of over 5600 members -https://www.meetup.com/Wild-Foodies-of-Philly/ started in 2010.

Could you add me to your list of foraging instructors? Utah should be before Virginia.
